Hi JP, Yes, probably on both counts. First, if you go away from a rubber pad design, you will only find Dual Trigger options. This means that the head and rim have separate triggers, and also requires that you use two inputs. You could use inputs 9/10 (this is the easiest and 'least wasteful') or you could use any other combination of 2 inputs on the DTXpress. With that problem out of the way, everything else becomes a personal preference. There are options that use mylar heads, and others with a mesh head. I just upgraded my snare to a mesh head one and I love it. Size options exist in the 10" - 14" range. Note that the larger sizes usually require a snare stand, so if you go for this size, plan on spending money for a stand too. I had tried a 10" Pintech as a first snare upgrade, and found myself still wanting more real estate, so I now have a 14". From a price perspective I think that Pintech has the lowest price (based on street prices for new models)with their AX14 (this is what I just got). My initial impressions are very positive of this product, and you can't beat Pintech's warranty.
