Sam and Walt, I really don't know if this helps, but I'm using a slightly renegade hi-hat set up. The controller is the HH60, but the cymbal is a DrumTech pole pad, which behaves like nothing in the Yamaha arsenal that I know of. The abnormality shows itself in HH sensitivity (manual p. 47). Using anything like the default setting for Yamaha pads created all sorts of inconsistenies in opening and closing. Eventually, I found that reducing the sensitivity setting to zero solved all my problems. Don't ask me why. Like I said, I have no idea whether any of this applies in Sam's case.
