The dtxpress II is the newer model. It features a better rack, Three-zone inputs on all inputs, a three-zone snare pad. I think all the pads are upgraded. I don't think the sounds are any different. You can add two mono pads to the existing system before you run out of inputs. Then you can upgrade to more three-zone pads for more sounds. Most pads by other manufacturers are compatible, with a little parameter tweaking.I don't know how they compare to Roland. Some of the other guys in the club can help you with that. Unless they have fixed it, the headphone volume is a bit low, so When you buy headphones, be sure to buy the ones with the LOWEST impedence for best volume.
