You have a couple options.

You don't have to use the plastic clamps and short tubes to mount a
pad.  You can buy a Yamaha CL940 standard tom mount (about $25 at a
shop, cheaper online) and a Gibraltar SCGRSMC Road Series Multi Clamp
(about $25 at a shop, cheaper online) -OR- a Gibraltar SCGPRMC Power
Rack Series Multi Clamp (about $20 at a shop, cheaper online).  This
is the more expensive, but all metal, better gripping alternative to
the plastic.

The other option is of course the plastic which you are already
familiar with.
