My opinion is that the biggest problem is the kick, and not so much the decibels it makes but that the vibration from kicking goes into the floor, which is somebody's ceiling and that somebody gets very annoeyd if your time is not perfect :) Maybe this sounds silly, but I'm actually planning to get a big enough board of plywood, which I can put on my bed and lay the kit on that, thus hopefully minimizing if not eliminating the noise carried downstairs.
