Hi UNH, First, let's get physical. You need a MIDI cable to connect the MIDI out port on the pm16 to MIDI in port on the xpress. Also, make sure the 3 position slider switch on the back of the xpress is in the MIDI position. So far so good? Next, you need to go into the Drum Map on the xpress, and find the first available MIDI note number. The drum map is accessed via the Utility menu. You must have a user defined kit selected to muck with the map. The map is almost the same set of screens as you are used to seeing in the Voice Menu. Page towards the end of the Utility menu until you see the first page that has MAP on the top line. On that page one of the parameters is N= . The N here stands for MIDI Note Number. Move the cursor to that parameter, and then start incrementing the MIDI Note Number until you find one that has a sound assigned to it. You need to avoid MIDI Note Numbers that say Reserved, Not Avail or anything else like that. Usually the first available note number will be around 15. Make a mental note of that MIDI Note Number, as we'll need it in a few minutes when we go back to the pm16. Now, without changing that Midi Note Number on the xpress, move your cursor down to the bottom line of the display, and select the category of the sound you want to use (tom, snare, etc), and then, the specific sound. If you page forward from this page, you will see the same screens that you are used to in the Voice menu, so you can set the volume, balance and other characteristics of this sound. If you need to define or change another MIDI Note Number, you have to back up to that first Map page again, and change the N= to the next MIDI Note Number you want to work with. Now back on the PM16 go into Advanced Edit mode and select the input number that you have your pad plugged into, and them page forward to the MIDI Note Number page for that input, and change the MIDI Note Number to the one I told you to remember a minute ago. If you've done this properly, what will happen is when you hit a pad connected to the pm16, the pm16 will send a MIDI message to the xpress, telling it to play a specific MIDI Note Number. The xpress, when it receives the message, will look at the Drum Map to see what sound is assigned to that MIDI Note Number, and tell the Tone Generators to make that noise. Simple as circumsizing a whale, which by the way takes four skin divers to do.
