Does anyone have any idea on how to work the roland pm16?

Does anyone have any idea on how to work the roland pm16?

2003-02-15 by underneathheaven <realvast@swbell.net>

Alright guys, I just got another pcy65 and I don't know how to make
it work with my roland pm16. I havent even read the instruction
book but steve said it didn't really say anything about it. First
of all, how do you connect the pm16 to your module? Second, any
tips on how to go about fixing up a cymbal connected the to the pm16
would be helpful! Even if you've worked with other expansion
accessories, I would appreciate the wisdom!! ANY help is welcome!!
Thank you!!

Hi UNH,

First, let's get physical. You need a MIDI cable to
connect the MIDI out port on the pm16 to MIDI in port
on the xpress. Also, make sure the 3 position slider
switch on the back of the xpress is in the MIDI
position. So far so good?

Next, you need to go into the Drum Map on the xpress,
and find the first available MIDI note number. The
drum map is accessed via the Utility menu. You must
have a user defined kit selected to muck with the map.
The map is almost the same set of screens as you are
used to seeing in the Voice Menu. Page towards the
end of the Utility menu until you see the first page
that has MAP on the top line. On that page one of the
parameters is N= . The N here stands for MIDI Note
Number. Move the cursor to that parameter, and then
start incrementing the MIDI Note Number until you find
one that has a sound assigned to it. You need to
avoid MIDI Note Numbers that say Reserved, Not Avail
or anything else like that. Usually the first
available note number will be around 15. Make a
mental note of that MIDI Note Number, as we'll need it
in a few minutes when we go back to the pm16.

Now, without changing that Midi Note Number on the
xpress, move your cursor down to the bottom line of
the display, and select the category of the sound you
want to use (tom, snare, etc), and then, the specific
sound. If you page forward from this page, you will
see the same screens that you are used to in the Voice
menu, so you can set the volume, balance and other
characteristics of this sound. If you need to define
or change another MIDI Note Number, you have to back
up to that first Map page again, and change the N= to
the next MIDI Note Number you want to work with.

Now back on the PM16 go into Advanced Edit mode and
select the input number that you have your pad plugged
into, and them page forward to the MIDI Note Number
page for that input, and change the MIDI Note Number
to the one I told you to remember a minute ago.

If you've done this properly, what will happen is when
you hit a pad connected to the pm16, the pm16 will
send a MIDI message to the xpress, telling it to play
a specific MIDI Note Number. The xpress, when it
receives the message, will look at the Drum Map to see
what sound is assigned to that MIDI Note Number, and
tell the Tone Generators to make that noise.

Simple as circumsizing a whale, which by the way takes
four skin divers to do.

Thanks a bunch!! This other girl wanted to be my valentine but she
doesn't know crap about the pm16 so I guess you can take her
place! :) (hehe, just kidding!)

That is plenty of help walt, but lets say I want to change to
another user defined kit...do I still have that pm16 working with me
or do I gotta recreate all the extra pads again? Thanks!

Re: [DTXpress] Re: Does anyone have any idea on how to work the roland pm16?

2003-02-16 by Walt

Hi UNH,

While working with Steve I discovered that the way the
xpress seems to use the drum map does not allow
anything but edits done via the voice menu (in other
words, only voice edits made to the locally attached
pads) to be saved. It seems to only load those into
the drum map when you change kits. Other modules
(like the DTX V2, allow edits to all of the MIDI notes
via the voice menu, and save all of those edits,
making it possible to switch the voices for the pads
on the PM-16 by changing to different kits on the V2
module. When you change kits in it, it loads that
whole drum map into memory, instead of just parts of
it as the xpress does.

What I can't figure out (since I don't have a PM-16
manual, and can't find one on the web, is what
facility the PM-16 has for saving preset kit
definitions, and how it works. I see mentions of it
having the ability to set up presets, but not how to
do it.

Re: Does anyone have any idea on how to work the roland pm16?

2003-02-16 by underneathheaven <realvast@swbell.net>

Hey walt! OK I followed the instructions you gave me to get the
pm16 working, but whenever I hit my crash cymbal, which I have set
to a crash, I get a weird, different sound that does not resemble a
cymbal at all. I don't even know what kinda sound it is! I have
the note number the same and everything. My pm16 says trig84 on the
on the front, you know that green lit number? I was wondering if
maybe I should just reset the pm16 back to its factory settings
because I bought it off a guy on ebay. Also, is there anything else
in the advanced set up that I need to mess with? What about midi
channel? Thanks for the help!

Hi UNH,

The channel should be set to 10.

hey Walt! I changed the midi channel in advanced edit to 10 but the
strange thing is, thats there no sound generated when that channel
is selected. I tested all the other channels and they all give me
this weird sound at different pitches kinda. And it doesn't matter
what sound I assign to the pcy because it still makes the same wierd
noise. I wonder what I'm missing here! Thanks!

One more thing...now I've realized that there are many different
channels to choose from within in the pm16 menu, so what channel
were you talking about exactly?

Re: [DTXpress] Re: Does anyone have any idea on how to work the roland pm16?

2003-02-17 by Walt

It should be the MIDI Channel number. That's the
channel that the xpress will be listening on for Midi
commands. So that means that the key parameters on
the pm16 (for each input) are:

Input # (this should be set to the input you have the
pad plugged into)
MIDI Channel number should be 10
Midi Note Number (need to be the same as the C= value
in the drum map)

then on the xpress, in the user drum map, you need to
assign a voice to that Midi Note number, as well as
the volume, etc.

If you still can't find the problem, two more things
to try are to 1) there are a few general MIDI pages in
the Utility menu, more towards the start of it than
the drum map is - check to be sure it looks like they
are set to receive MIDI information on channel 10,
including Program Changes; and 2) reset the pm16, then
set it up again. It is only a few parameters to put
back in, and cleaning it up will not hurt.

I should have a few minutes later to get on the phone
with you, if this doesn't work for you. Walt

Hey Walt! Sorry I havent posted anything yet but when the week
comes I get busy and can barely even play my drums! I'll out what
you suggested within the week though and let you know how it goes.
I printed it out and read over it and there are some things I need
to change so I'm pretty sure its gonna work, but I'll let you all
know soon! Thanks!!

Re: Does anyone have any idea on how to work the roland pm16?

2003-02-21 by underneathheaven <realvast@swbell.net>

Hey Walt, ok I got an update! I tried messing with the settings on
the PM16 again today and still no luck. If placed in channel 10 the
cymbal makes no sound and any other channel makes that weird noise.
I resetted the pm16 but nothing still. Midi note number is the N=
in the dtxpress right? then the midi channel is 10 correct? but
what about ch in the pm16? Maybe we should get on the phone cause I
need some help here! Let me know and thanks!

Re: [DTXpress] Re: Does anyone have any idea on how to work the roland pm16?

2003-02-22 by Walt

Hi UNH,

I am fairly open tomorrow - I'll be doing chores and
running around. My number is 507-281-8805. The only
other person that may answer the phone is my wife
Theresa. We do have a machine on the line, so if no
one answers by te 4th ring - hang up or leave a
message. I'm in Minnesota which is on Central time.
I would think anytime late afternoon on would be safe.
