The way it was explained to me was like this. When we listen to live acoustic music as in an orchestra or dixieland band all the sounds get to our ear in a certain order. The highs travel faster, the lows travel slower. Our ear gets the sounds and we can pick up the different instruments. Each instruments sound finds its own path to our ear. When we listen to music that is amplified and put through a sound system the sounds go into the mixer and come out the sound system at the same time through a speaker. Think of little pipes (different instruments, voices) connecting to one bigger pipe (the speaker) that the sound has to come through. Now the individual sounds come out in a different order and tend to sound muddy. The Aural Exciter as well as a Sonic Maximizer puts those sounds in the correct order coming out of the speaker so that the music sounds crisp and clear as nature intended.
If you heard the difference you would see/hear what I mean. The difference is remarkable. You can pick the different parts of the drumset. The big bottom circuitry gives the bass a bump/boost. This is how I understand it.
