Hi Randall, Welcome aboard. I'm a big midwest percussion fan. There are numerous options for getting the toms to sound less like the 80s drum machines. In time, you'll find your favorites voices and colors. But you have to experiment. The hi hat controller is adjustable in the menu for sensitivity, offset, and foot spash timing, as well as for sounds. There is definitely a learning curve for e-drums. Programming the module is complicated enough to take a while to feel completely comfortable. Most likely, issues will come up for you along the way. The board is a great resource. By the way, many of us here are fans of mesh heads, or more accurately, woven heads. Though which particular pad a drummer prefers to hit is largely a matter of personal taste, the various types do show their advantages in time. Unfortunately, store demo models rarely are the best kits to demonstrate them effectively. But getting wherever you eventually get is half the fun, even though you never get to the end of it. Enjoy.
