Welcome. This is a great place to ask questions and learn al about 
the DTX through others' trial and errors.

As far as the 'tapping' goes, you can purchase rubber drums tips that 
are used for practicing. They are little rubber tips that slip over 
the end of your stick. I found that they do reduce the noise 
somewhat, but they also reduce stick response.
