Hi Antman, You've put your finger on something. The Yamaha sounds are all supposedly sampled, but in the case of the cymbals, you'd never know it. As good as many of the DTXpress's drum sounds are, the cymbals seem to lag far behind (though I like the crashes much better than the rides). The reason for the difference may be that Yamaha manufactures drums but not cymbals. The sounds have to come from somewhere, but where? Wouldn't the company have to pay a licensing fee if it sampled, say, Zildjian or Paiste products? Enough said. Mediocre cymbal sounds seem to be the outcome. What do you get when you layer two mediocre cymbal sounds--one as half as mediocre or one twice as mediocre? Okay, I'm being harsh to make a point. The situation isn't all that bad. I agree with Scott about layering. I leave the crashes alone and layer the rides. I haven't tried Scott's idea; it sounds promising. I usually layer two related sounds to get a stronger version. The resulting ride definitely sounds better when other instruments are playing; in a vaccuum, it still doesn't sound . . . beautiful.
