You only need a stereo cable if you havea pad plugged into the 
secondary input on the kick tower. It'll work with a mono.

Actually, I have seen a photo of a modified double pedal where the 
beaters were arranged one over the other rather than side-by-side. 
That way, they can both fit on the pad.

However, I can't now find the photo and I'm aware my credibility is 
now shot...
