i have found that if you use the Auto set function with the pad
sensitivity (the adjustment on the pad itself) turned up all the way
then turn it down ONCE you have performed the auto set function
you should be able to have greater expression in you playting as
the hardest hits still register all the way but the softer are notably
quieter. as normal hits will but too quiet now you will also have to
increase the volume of the pad so it sounds normal with a
normal hit.
i do not recomend using the hard settings for this adjustment as
normal hits to the pad will be too quite.

Hey guys,
Just wondering if you think that the reverb presets on the kits, and
sounds are a bit too much?
Im planning on recording drums on a song that has gone from SC, to
Fla. to me and then back to SC.
I havent tried it yet but from just hearing the kit through head
phones and a pa, just seems too extreme.
Has anyone tried recording without changing a thing?
If so..is there a same on the site here?

Those with computer savvy among us say that Yahoo could and should do
a better job of blocking spam, but the heart of the problem is that
the groups who are having serious problems do not have moderators
dealing with it. Moderators have a few options for policing email
and/or membership that can reduce or completely elimininate
inappropriate posts. Look forward to your DM5 adventures.

There are a bunch of recordings in the "Files" section of this site.
Some of them go back to 1999 or 2000, when the DTXpressI.1 was
current. If you like any of them, you could post public questions
here to the authors, or email them offline, about how they set up the
sound. To me the degree of reverb, and the kind, depend on
application. In my years fooling around with this unit, I've never
been able to come up with a rule of thumb, or necessarily a favorite
reverb setting. Everything seems to fly on its own terms.

I can't remember: Does footclose on the Xpress have its own
parameters in the voice menu? If the cable checks out okay, it's
possible, I guess, that something vital got deleted accidentally from
the settings (like the voice itself?). Also, is something amiss with
the common hi hat sensitivity setting in the voice menu, or the
offset/time settings in utility? If not, the pedal may have a
mechanical problem that keeps it from running its full course. I've
run into something similar, and have duplicated the problem
artificially, with another company's controller, by shortening the
throw, although when I do so, I don't get a closed hat stick sound.

Whenever I record with the DTX, turn the reverb for the individual
voice and for the kit itself to '0'. The engineer can always add
reverb a lot easier than he can take it away.

I have made pads from just about anything that is durable enough to be
struck, and can be mounted on a stand.b Here is a link to my site. I

The box type is VERY easy to make, and Very cheap!!!

You didn't ask about crossfading, but I saved an email that I once
wrote to someone about it that might come in handy, as one person's
view. I've read some incredibly imaginative posts about layering;
I'll leave that aspect in more capable hands. But just in case you
start considering crossfading, here's 2 cents:
Crossfading can be really frustrating. One way to manage it on a
snare is to crossfade between a snare sound and a complementary rim
sound. That way, you don't have to mess too much with tuning, decay,
et al, since the rim sound itself constitutes enough of a difference.
Unfortunately, the transition on the DTXPU is a little abrupt
regardless of which setting you use; you may end up getting more
rimshot than you want. For me, a higher-number setting works best.
But I find that unless the sounds are similar to begin with, the
transition can sound awkward, inclining you back to a single voice.
Some people use crossfade to approximate a dual zone pad, elevating
the gain on V1 and lowering it on V2 so that both voices sound at
approximately the same level, despite V2's higher velocity.
What I prefer is to crossfade using the same sound in order to mimic
the dynamics of an acoustic drum. In this technique, V1 is the same
as V2 but with less decay, a reduced frequency cutoff, and perhaps a
half-step-lower tuning. When V2 kicks in at the higher velocity, it
has some of the tonal qualities of an acoustic snare or tom when it
is struck harder.
To me, cymbals don't cut it crossfaded. But the ride voices in the
Yamulka module certainly can use some help; layering can give them
some punch (I prefer layering rides with sounds from the same family,
just to create more body, but since I switched to Visu-lites, I've
stuck to single layers). I like the crashes the way they are (at
least three or four of them), without further tinkering, but that's
one person's opinion. Again, some people crossfade cymbals to get a
dual-zone effect. Because, by a happy coincidence, the Yam cymbals
get louder naturally near the "bell" area, a V2 programmed as a bell
sound will kick in when the stick approaches the wing nut, without
any change in velocity, as if a real bell were there.
If you try these or any other experiments, let me know how they work
for you. As daunting as trying to integrate two voices can be, some
modules and MIDI devices give you four or more slots to fill, with
the further option of alternating the sounds. The mathematics are
staggering.

K guys,
I just tweeked a custom kit and took one of our songs on the Korg
1600 and recorded it to a virtual track.
Now, listening back to it, I have a few things I dont really like.
Toms are too hot, and cymbals too brite.
My question is this....
If I record to the DTX and to the korg...can I go back and tweek the
set now that I have a good take within the "Custom kit"..play it
back and record it to the Korg.
Another words. I just want to change certian levels with in the kit
on the pattern i just recorded and not do another take.
Making any sense?

What I would like to be able to do is load a midi file into my module
(DTXTREME) or another synth module and make it stay in time with
what I am playing on the drums.
I dont think the module has this feature built in but I was hoping
maybe there was a box out there that could take a trigger send say
from the kick drum and convert this into some kind of clock that a
synth module would sync to.
The reason I would want to do this is so I could have a keyboard
player lay down the horns and strings to a song in midi format that
matches our version of a song. Then when I hit say a rim it starts
the song and keeps in time with me and plays the horn parts at the
right time in the song

Hi SC,
First of all, welcome. Nice to have you with us. In technical e-drum
talk, the TP80S is known as a stereo cymbal rather than a dual-zone.
The designation is almost a total misnomer, but some terminological
distinction was necessary for it. Stereo triggers are primarily made
of gum rubbber (as opposed to woven heads for drums and acrylic or
metal for cymbals). They contain two or three pickups--a piezo (the
main one) and, in the TP80S' case, a second one on the rim (termed an
FSR). Stereo triggers allow two (or three, for the TP65S) sounds
through a single input with a stereo cable. A dual-zone pad requires
two inputs, like 9/10 (accessed through one jack by a TRS splitter),
or any other two inputs (either "stereo" or mono) with two mono
cables. Pads like the TP80S will only work as mono pads through input
9/10, no matter how you try to connect them, because of their
internal electronics. I think that any of inputs 1-8 will provide two
voices with a stereo pad.
To use the rim trigger on the DTXpressI--say, for the default snare
input--acroll to input 2 on the voice menu and then to rim 2, or if
your module is set up this way, hit the rim while in the voice menu
to get rim 2 on the screen. Then you can set the new voice parameters
for it (Yamaha may already have loaded their own).

As long as you are sync'ed up w/MIDI.
Plug a MIDI cable into the 'out' of the Korg and 'in' of the module. Make
sure the Korg is sending MIDI control messages. If the
DTXpress is in 'auto' or 'ext' sync mode, you should be able to hit play
on the 1600 and play the seq on the DTXpress. As long as you
don't commit your performance to 'tape' you can change the levels and
sounds of each drum.

As you may or may not have noticed, the group recently acquired three
new moderators after a long period without anyone to police or

emails and web postings from these undesirable influences, but we are
looking forward to finishing this business so that we can concentrate
exclusively on our common interests.
One important piece of information that has been sorely lacking is
the number of listed members, among the current 730 or so, who still
maintain interest in the group's messages and archives, even though
they may not participate anymore, or never have participated at all

I *would* in fact consider myself to be part of the "silent
majority."
To elaborate:
I bought my Yamaha DTxpress II in mid April of 2003 (so, about 4
months ago) and really love having it. I still use my Premier Cabria for
live performances, but it's really wonderful to have something small, easy
to transport and *quiet* that I can use for practicing on.
During the first month or so of my having owned the kit, I
discovered your group and started reading through it regularly. However,
at some point I eventually started asking questions about things I was
having difficulty with in regards to the DTxpress II and found myself
extremely disappointed with the responses I was getting. While a fair
number of people *were* responding to my questions, it seemed that most of
them were responding without even reading my question fully, let alone
taking any time to try to think up a worthwhile response or to try doing
what I was having trouble with on *their* kit. Worse yet -- as the thread
grew longer, people kept chiming back into the discussion while seemingly
unaware of suggestions they'd thrown at me themselves in the past!
This became increasingly frustrating for me until at some point I
gave up on the group completely and stopped reading. And haven't gone
back to it since.
However, I still own and love my DTxpress II, and do think it's
very possible that I'll go back and at least browse through the group at
many points in the future. So yes, I'd consider myself part of the
"silent majority."
