I can't answer the question about the cymbal pad. As far as the Hi-hat goes... assuming that the DTXpress I Hi-hat pedal interacts with the module in the same fashion as the DTXpress II does, are you keeping your foot on the pedal when you set the voice. If you push the pedal down, take your foot off of it, and then set the voice you would be associating the bass voice with an open Hi-hat. Does that make sense. Based on your description, that was the first thing I thought of. Hope it helps.
