Yoav,

You can bring the gain down, but frankly I don't think that it will 
do much good. I think your playing style, as well as the facts of the 
matter, dictates that you splice a pot between the snare and its 
input. If you don't want to rip apart wire to do it yourself, you can 
buy a Guyatone cable with a volume control already inserted. The 
other handy option is an acoustic pickup for guitar with its own 
rotary knob, as Brian LaRue suggested. The upshot is that you should 
be able to adjust the signal so that only the hardest hits register 
maximum effect.
