Mike,

As I see it there were three issues for me when it came to buying
headphones: volume, ambient noise level and sound quality.

The module generates the volume not the headphones.
The dtxpress1/2 module can only produce a certain level of output, even if
you set all the volume levels for each pad at 127 and the master volume
level at the highest level. By setting all the pad levels at the highest
settings, I could get a reasonable volume level through my Audio-technic
closed back headphones but I lost the ability to make a particular
drum/cymbal standout above the others. The only way to achieve that was to
lower the volume all the pads to 70 and tweak the other pads that I wanted
to stand out to 100+. This meant that I would need something to increase
the volume level externally. My solution at the time was using a pre-amp
initially and then ultimately to purchase a mixer (Mackie DFX12).

I tried several headphones (borrowed from friends) and noted that the closed
back design was the only way to minimize the ambient stick sounds.

As far as sound quality, after spending many years, playing the music from
Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, etc.it is a moot point. I actually went to one of
the Deep Purples concerts back in the early seventies when I was in Germany.
We sat about 20 from center stage. The volume was so loud, that I remember
screaming at the top of my lungs about 1" from the ear of my buddy and he
couldn't hear a word I was saying. We had to wait until between songs to
talk. I had ringing in my ears for days after that. That was the days of the
120-130db concerts, louder is better theory. I pretty much have continuous
ring these days so that the "sound quality" issue is almost irrelavant for
me these days.

So basically, ambient noise levels and sound quality can be addressed by
quality headphones. But volume can really only be addressed through external
amplification.
