Sorry to hear about the gig. There are a few things to eliminate that next time though. If the plave was "big" and the kit was drowned out then the other instruments should have turned down. Do you have a monitor behind you? Was everyone going through the PA? Remember that a live gig is much like a recording. There has to be proper balance. By reading your post it sounds like everything else was over powering you. if the pa was maxed...then others should have turned down, I'd like to know more about the gig, room, set up and all. In all seriousness, there is no reason for you to be over powered and drwoned out.
