You may do, but the good news is there's a ton of experience with 
Pintech pads and Yamaha modules hereabouts so don't fret it.

As for "hotspots" - some pads have areas right near the piezo where 
they trigger at or near maximum, with the rest of the pad more 
graded. There are various physical strategies the manufacturers use 
to mitigate this (like foam cones between the pizeo and the head, or 
with Yamaha's gum pads a sort of "distribution" layer. However, as 
you say, Pintech does have this problem. I certainly get it with my 
SE-102 (rubber) pad. You learn to live with it - or in my case, use 
it to advantage.
