I have never had any trouble with midi cables, even cheap ones. I use all sorts of din to din extensions when experimenting and they always work - the trouble for me is usually in setting parameters or midi in/outs in the software. Try using a cable from the DTX to your sequencer software - if it plays ok then the cable is ok (presuming your software settings are right). Some Soundblaster cards need special optical midi adaptors when used on the game port - they don't always ship with the card and generic adaptors don't always work either. If you have a USB port, consider a USB midi interface - they are very reliable, multiport, and very easy to set-up.
