Oh, that doesn't sound good. In my experience, Yamaha has done a 
superlative job of avoiding hotspots with the gum rubber pads on both 
the older TP80 and the newer TP65, so it's not a design issue. 
Something physical may be amiss.

First stop is probably to check the cable (try a known good one), and 
clean the contacts in the plugs both on the pad and on the module. 
You may have either dirty contacts or a short situation.

After that, I defer to the estimable OGD who has performed 
exploratory surgery on all of Yamaha's pads and may be able to offer 
more directed advice.
