TP80S.... SNARE HOT SPOTS

TP80S.... SNARE HOT SPOTS

2004-01-23 by rtmtdrummer

I have a DTXPress I, with a TP80S as a snare.
My issue is it sometimes has hot spots while playing and the volume
is not quiet loud enough sometimes. These usally happen when I am
playing along with the songs in the module. I have to hit a small
area right below where the mount rod is. I have the snare volume
turned way up, and the pad volume set up pretty high too. Any
sugestions on what to try next?

Oh, that doesn't sound good. In my experience, Yamaha has done a
superlative job of avoiding hotspots with the gum rubber pads on both
the older TP80 and the newer TP65, so it's not a design issue.
Something physical may be amiss.

First stop is probably to check the cable (try a known good one), and
clean the contacts in the plugs both on the pad and on the module.
You may have either dirty contacts or a short situation.

After that, I defer to the estimable OGD who has performed
exploratory surgery on all of Yamaha's pads and may be able to offer
more directed advice.

I have used differnt cables and even another tp80s pad.
I only seem to have this problem on the snare sound. I will change
one of the toms to a snare sound and and still use the tom input to
see if it is different. Then I will use the snare input and use a tom
sound to see if it changes.
Any and all ideas are welcome.

The piezo on these pads are located dead centered on a metal plate that is
bonded to the underside of the rubber striking surface. So if a hot spot
were to occur, it would be in the center of the pad, I would imagine. If you
are striking the pad toward the mounting bracket side and getting a hot
spot, it could be a loose connection inside.

Things to try:

-As Stewart said, use a different cable, also make sure you are not
stressing the cable at the connector.
-Plug the pad into another trigger input and see if it still occurs. If it
does, then it's an internal problem.
-If you plug it into another input and it goes away, then do you have
crossfading setup on the pad?

If it is an internal problem, then considering it is out of the warranty
period, you either: live with it, you replace it or you open it up and check
for loose connections.

The rubber pad is glued to the bottom plastic housing at two locations
adjacent to the mounted bracket. To get good access, you will have to
destroy one of the glue locations. but be careful because when you can only
lift the rubber pad away from the bottom house about half, because the two
wires from the PCB to the Piezo is not that long. When I took my apart, I
just destroyed the glue at both locations, and didn't re-glue it and it
seems to work fine. Once it is open, check to make sure the piezo is firmly
glued to the metal plate.
