Vern, I used to spend alot a time playing along to the CD's, over and over again. Especially in my younger days. Now days I will spend maybe half hour at the beginning of each session playing to a CD to warmed up. I then switch over to the Radio. I will spend a half-hour on one station, say Rock, then move to C&W, then Jazz, etc. I try to play along mostly to songs I have never heard or maybe heard once or twice but never learned to play. I find that it helps me keep my ears (and mind) open and forces me to anticipate. It also gets me away from the monkey see/monkey do of playing the same songs over and over and having my mind wonder off thinking about something else, while I am doing the same repetive beat over and over again. For me this works because I don't have to learn a particular song down to the tenth degree and therefore can improvise when and where I want too and not necessarily following what someone else created. In the end I may not have mastered or even come close to every nusance, but it certainly feels more creative and fun.
