Practice Music?

Practice Music?

2004-01-28 by Vernon Graner

Ok, so I'm trying to get a few minutes of practice in each day, and I'm
looking for suggestions on what music I should try to play along with to
help develop different styles... So far I've been using these:

Rock-- Back in Black, AC/DC
        Enter Sandman, Metallica
Welcome To The Jungle, Guns and Roses
        Rock Candy, Montrose

Swing-- Boot Scootin Boogie, Brooks & Dun
All my Xs live in Texas, George Strait
Zoot Suit Riot, Cherry Poppin Daddies

Speed-- Good Girls Don't, The Knack
        Superbeast, Rob Zombie

Agility-- Chop Suey, System of a Down
          Montate, Puya

Humility-- Yyz, Rush :)

So, any other Suggestions? What do you listen to/practice to?

Vern

Vern,

I used to spend alot a time playing along to the CD's, over and over again.
Especially in my younger days. Now days I will spend maybe half hour at the
beginning of each session playing to a CD to warmed up. I then switch over
to the Radio. I will spend a half-hour on one station, say Rock, then move
to C&W, then Jazz, etc. I try to play along mostly to songs I have never
heard or maybe heard once or twice but never learned to play. I find that it
helps me keep my ears (and mind) open and forces me to anticipate. It also
gets me away from the monkey see/monkey do of playing the same songs over
and over and having my mind wonder off thinking about something else, while
I am doing the same repetive beat over and over again.

For me this works because I don't have to learn a particular song down to
the tenth degree and therefore can improvise when and where I want too and
not necessarily following what someone else created. In the end I may not
have mastered or even come close to every nusance, but it certainly feels
more creative and fun.

Damn, I knew there was something missing on my journey
to drummerhood.

I've still not mastered the 4/4 Rock beat, but so far
that's what I've used for the songs I've composed.....

please allow me to ask the same question but for a
much much *MUCH* basic drumming level.

then I may some day make good use of my double bass
pedal so my wife won't rub on my face the extra money
I spent on it.

So any recommendations on some basic practice song,
that may help me raise my drum playing ability?

sorry for taking advantage of your previously made
question Vern.

Regards.

Pedro.
