Jim,

The rim would have to take up its own input. Suggest that your friend 
look into a discontinued Kat MIDIkiti or Roland PM-16 trigger-to-MIDI 
devices to expand the module cheaply (under $100). Roland's current 
TMC-6 can be had these days for a little more than $200. If you want 
more info, contact me offline. Good move holding onto the DTXtreme. 
I'll wager that you find a use for it.
