Hi Paul, Have you tried Thomann, which has a price of 990 Eur for the III? > 2) Should I go for an older kit - do they last or are the pads ruined > after such a beating???? A used DTXpress II wouldn't be a bad option if the alternative were a new DTXpress IIISTD. The change in this case would simply be the new cymbal sounds in the module and a redesigned rack. You could probably live without them if money, availability, timing, etc. were important considerations. The gum rubber pads and cymbals generally hold up pretty well over time; there are exceptions to every trend, but in this case not worth passing up a bargain if one is to be had. I don't think that an older kit would work as well if the DTXpressIIISP were the preferred alternative. The new round cymbals (one of them with three voices), the curved rack, and the hi hat on a stand might be too hard to resist. In any event, unless the deal were really great, you might not want to go so far back as the DTXpress I or the DTX v2.0, because they'd be limiting if you ever wanted to pursue newer Yamaha pads and cymbals, and, at that age, the components themselves might be compromised in a meaningful sense (thougn not necessarily).
