potential purchase

potential purchase

2004-03-16 by Paul Jones

I intend to get a dtxpress, but pricing in the UK is terrible. The
cheapest I can get a dtxpress II is £875 ($1500). I've seen US shops
selling the dtxpress III special edition for less!
Anyway, my question is twofold -
1) Anyone know anywhere in the UK I can get one for less?
2) Should I go for an older kit - do they last or are the pads ruined
after such a beating????

Many thanks to anyone that can help.

Keep up the good work.

Hi Paul,

Have you tried Thomann, which has a price of 990 Eur for the III?

A used DTXpress II wouldn't be a bad option if the alternative were a
new DTXpress IIISTD. The change in this case would simply be the new
cymbal sounds in the module and a redesigned rack. You could probably
live without them if money, availability, timing, etc. were important
considerations. The gum rubber pads and cymbals generally hold up
pretty well over time; there are exceptions to every trend, but in
this case not worth passing up a bargain if one is to be had. I don't
think that an older kit would work as well if the DTXpressIIISP were
the preferred alternative. The new round cymbals (one of them with
three voices), the curved rack, and the hi hat on a stand might be
too hard to resist. In any event, unless the deal were really great,
you might not want to go so far back as the DTXpress I or the DTX
v2.0, because they'd be limiting if you ever wanted to pursue newer
Yamaha pads and cymbals, and, at that age, the components themselves
might be compromised in a meaningful sense (thougn not necessarily).

You should not have to pay more than £750 new. Drumwright and Piedog
advertise at £745, Poole Percussion at £799, and there are others.
They also turn up on eBay from time to time, though there's only one
there now and it looks very sus (new seller with zero feedback and
only a catalogue photo).

Availability will be your problem. I doubt you'll be able to find
stock. The DTXpressIII is available in Europe (several posters here
have reported having one). Thomann has the II advertised at E990
(£702) on which you'd obviously have shipping.

If it were me, right now I would hang on for the III.

Try piedog.com, andertonsonline.co.uk, starland.co.uk, scheerers.com,
giggear.co.uk, soundattak.co.uk, 4-drums.co.uk, hwaudio.co.uk,
footesmusic.com. All £800 or less, cheapest first. Also,
www.netzmarkt.de/thomann which are probably the cheapest, but German,
and shop.drummusic.com which were cheap (and non-UK) but now want £870
for the DTXpress 3 claiming £1338 list price, which is rubbish, but
strangely with the DTXpress 3 special at £953!

Thomann are notoriously bad at updating their non-German listings
which I suppose I can forgive them for. The picture is of a III,
the item name says III but then they go and put II in the
description. I also love the way they drift into German half way
through. :-)

They look to be offering a great deal...
One more question.
How is the hi-hat triggered? Does the pedal come with the kit?

Thanks,
Paul.

sorry for my ignorance!

An e-hat has two components - the "cymbal" pad, which is just a
regular pizeo trigger pad - and an electronic device which simulates
the variable opening of the hi-hat "cymbals". In the case of the
DTXpress, this device is built into the HH65 pedal that comes with
the kit (DTXpressII or III Standard). In the case of the new RHH130
hi-hat pad on the DTXpressIII Special and the DTXtreme kits, this
device lives in the hi-hat pad and is operated by a standard
mechanical hi-hat pedal.

Stewart,

Thanks for the reply...

I've just placed an order for a DTXpress III. They said that pedals
were not included, so I wanted to know how the hi-hat worked and what
kind of pedal I would need to buy. I suppose that they don't include
the kick pedal, but DO include the HH?

Thanks.
Paul.

Paul,

Right. Kick pedal is normally not included, though many sellers offer
one as a bonus (with Yamaha's blessing).

Bizarrely, Thomann sell the DTXpress III with a pedal or without one
for exactly the same price. The order codes are 167662 or 156682
respectively although the pedal included doesn't appear to be the
best in the world.

If it's that bad, maybe they should have reduced the price.

I've ordered a dtxIII from Thomann, but they're asking for a
photocopy of the card including the signature and a copy of a

Is this normal practice for this company? I've never had to do this
before.

Any help pleasE?

Hi

I've ordered stuff from Thomann numerous times. It was always enough
for me to fill out the credit card details in the web. No questions
asked. Did you use the secure server on their checkout?

Never had problems with Thomann, though. Always had my orders
delivered ok.

sounds like they're trying to protect themselves from credit card fraud
as much as they can. They've most likely been burned before, so they
presume the owner of the card will go through these procedures to make
his purchase.
Don't worry, it's ultimately protecting you, as well.

Seconded. Fill in the details, get an email saying it's being dealt
