Dave,
Bear with me. I don't have a mac or garageband, but I'll try to get
the ball rolling. Check that you have MIDI In and Out connected
correctly from one component to the other. Manufacturers don't have a
standard labeling procedure. "In" and "Out" can mean contradictory
things; for some "In" goes to "In" and "Oout" to "Out," whereas for
others opposites attract. Switch them around and try again.
Do you have a DTXpressII? If so, and the software is set up properly
to recognize the MIDI port, you may need to do a factory reset on the
DTXPII module. The DTXPII shipped with a bug that required a reset
before exporting MIDI data. You'll also have to find a way to save
your user information, since the reset will obliterate them. Either
write down your important settings, store them in another device, or
send them to software on your computer (does DTXchange work for
mac?). But don't do it yet. Wait to see whether anyone is able to
break down your problem into better detail, but be aware that it may
be necessary. A DTXPIII shouldn't need a reset; after we brought the
problem to Yamaha's attention, they fixed it.
Remember that your cables may have been correctly connected before
you switched them. After a reset, you may have to switch them again.
