I tried the PCY130s on input 5 (stereo input) and the choke worked 
fine.  Was this a problem with earlier modules?

Man, that's not cool at all.  Maybe this should be brought to 
Yamaha's attention for a possible improvement/upgrade.  The way I'm 
understanding it, once you swap or add any pads you lose all your 48 
factory drumkits.

I guess the next question is: can I edit the standard factory kits 
without using a user kit space?
