Swapping Pad Input Assignments

Swapping Pad Input Assignments

2004-06-21 by uac235

Hi guys. I recently got a DTXIIISP and I'm loving it. I stumbled
upon this group while looking for some better instructions for the
kit (the Yamaha manual really blows) and I'm glad I did since I've
been able to get answers for just about every question I've had.

I got bit by the upgrade bug. Just couldn't stand having an empty
input in the back of the machine. I got a TP120SD to replace my
TP65s as the snare (wanted a bigger snare and to get rid of that bar
over my knee). I wanted to use my TP65s as a 4th Tom and use the 3-
zone capabilities to add some percussion sounds. To do this I would
have to swap about 3 pads around from their inputs.

So my question is: Is there a way to swap inputs assignments or do I
have to individually assign new voices for each pad for every single
kit?

I've searched the archives and the manual but haven't been able to
find and answer.

Thanks and sorry for the winded message. Next one will be short, I
promise.

You can swap 1 and 9 (trigger setup, input exchange [In Excg]).

Not sure if that helps though!

Keith.

Thanks for the response Keith. Let me give you a little more info.

I'm planning to move the TP65s to input 7 (3-zone crash input) and
give it a 4th Tom sound with percussion on the rims, then I'll move
my PCY130s to one of the stereo inputs (input 5), and finally move
Tom3 to the pad10 input. When I do that, all the preset kits will be
messed up. As far as I can tell I have an uphill battle awaiting me.

Hope that clarifies my question. Thanks,

Jaime

You realise that if you do this you will lose the ability to "choke"
your PCY130S cymbal? Only inputs 1, 6 and 7 support choke.

You do. As Keith said, the only support in the module for swapping
or "remapping" inputs is the exchange of #1 and #9 for the situation
where you move the KP65 to #9/10 to make use of the splitter. You
will have to remap everything by hand I'm afraid.

If you still need the choking feature, you may still be able to get
Yamaha to send you an update rom chip. The chip restores the choking
feature to all inputs 1-8, similar to what was available on the
Dtxpress I and what is currently available on the Dtxpress III.

If you look at the first photo in the module DTXPUII gallery, the ROM
chip is the long horizontal socketed chip, just above and to the
right of the round button battery.

I think his kit is the III so should be OK?

I tried the PCY130s on input 5 (stereo input) and the choke worked
fine. Was this a problem with earlier modules?

Man, that's not cool at all. Maybe this should be brought to
Yamaha's attention for a possible improvement/upgrade. The way I'm
understanding it, once you swap or add any pads you lose all your 48
factory drumkits.

I guess the next question is: can I edit the standard factory kits
without using a user kit space?

Sorry, wasn't paying attention and didn't realise you had a III.
Yes, this was a problem with II

It's worth mentioning, but the odds on them doing something about it
are negligible. 99% of users use stock configurations of pads and
kits, so from ahard-nose Product Management perspective why should
they bother?

"Lose" is rather an extreme statement. They will all still be there
and be usable in some form. But if you've swapped pad types (put a
tom pad on a cymbal input) the mappings won't be useful.

No. But I have a very custom setup, have had a DTXpress for over a
year, and haven't even come close to using all the user kit slots. I
think I'm up to 66, and that's only because I haven't cleared out
some experimental setups. I guess I have ten kits I use regularly.

Jaime,

Maybe you should re-consider your re-arrangement. I think you are
trying to make use of your 3 zone snare which is now under utilised.
You could just use it as a 2 zone, without all the shuffling around.
If you then want yet another sound, buy another two or three zone pad
(or cymbal) for a stereo input and avoid all the shuffling.

Keith.

One of the neat features that Yamaha added on the Dtxpress III module is
when you select the RHH130 as the pad type for input no 8 (Hihat), the
module will disable the choking feature, so you can't accidentally "choke"
your hihat, unlike on the I/II(M) modules.
