Amplification Preferences

Amplification Preferences

2004-10-03 by quarlofx

Greetings Most Honorable and Helpful Group,

I tried to start a thread awhile back regarding the
satisfaction/desirability/experiential quality of playing through
headphones to no avail (thanks, Ed, for *your* assistance ;-)) and am
looking (hopefully) for some help from those who play through
standalone amplification.

What amps/systems are you using? What are your likes/dislikes
regarding that particular setup? Hardware recommendations
for/against? Again, this is a subjective arena, but I think it might
be useful (certainly to *me*) to hear some user experiences and/or
preferences.

I am not too concerned with PA applications since (at 55) my gigging
days are probably over (hope springs eternal and all that, but ...
let's be realistic!). Inquiring ex-garage/bar band drummers are dying
to know!! Thanks, guys!!

hello F

I myself have been blessed with the use of an older Peavey Keyboard
amp- the KB-3 I believe. It seems to be more than sufficient for
playing in small spaces- I have not yet driven it into distortion. I
think you will find that most of us settle on keyboard amps as well as
PAs, since these devices are designed to provide fairly linear
response- in other words they do not unduly emphasize one part of the
audible range over another. Guitar amps tend to be hot in the middle
and high range in my opinion, and bass amps roll off in the higher
frequencies. Audio types will tell you to have plenty of power, not so
much for loudness, but so the amplifier can handle the brief
transients that occur at the beginning of a whack. This nearly
inaudible distortion destroys high frequency drivers (usually horns in
music amps) and is subtly irritating over time.

Team:

I would also like to inquire on this...! Great topic
I have a Peavy Club PA w/2 Toa on stand speakers, 200w head, that I
think is overkill, but probably provides a great sound!I would love to
hear about a reasonable full range keyboard amp etc that is
recommended? Also, could one add, with a little work, a self powered
subwoofer?
Cheers
Uncle Don

A man goes to an exotic tropical island for a vacation. As the boat
nears the island, he notices the constant sound of drumming coming from
the island. As he gets off the boat, he asks the first native he sees
how long the drumming will go on. The native casts about nervously and
says "very bad when the drumming stops."

At the end of the day, the drumming is still going and is starting to
get on his nerves. So, he asks another native when the drumming will
stop. The native looks as if he's just been reminded of something very
unpleasant. "Very bad when the drumming stops," he says, and hurries
off.

After a couple of days with little sleep, our traveller is finally fed
up, grabs the nearest native, slams him up against a tree, and shouts
"What happens when the drumming stops?!!"

I use a Peavey KB4 keyboard amp and enjoy it very much. Hi's and
low's superb. Paid around $430 at a local music store. Searched the
internet and couldn't find any cheaper. Would have paid a lot more
for shipping because that thing is heavy. Has wheels though...
