Wrist Problems

Wrist Problems

2001-05-21 by Mike Harrison

Has anybody experienced any wrist pains after playing for
a while? I have had them ever since I have had my DTX.
Its like a tendon type pain that can also occur just about
anytime when I twist my wrist into the wrong postion, even
when I havent played for a few days. The pads are quite
hard compared to a normal drum and I dont tend to play
any differently on DTX or real drums, so I suppose easing
up on the power might help?

Anyboby else had the same????
Mike

DTXpress live!!

2001-05-22 by Giles Hearn

Hi all.
I've now played the DTXpress at three gigs and I've
been very happy with the sound. So was the engineer.
Oh, the drummer in the support band was quite taken as
well. In fact he said he was going to buy one.
Admittedly, it's at its best through a good
professional PA. We played at the Hope & Anchor and
the PA there was like a child's toy.

Anyway, I used only the DTXpress - no extra drums or
cymbals - straight out of the box. For those of you
who want proof, go to the following URL.
It's a 28 min webcast of the last gig. recorded at the
Bull & Gate in London. The sound quality is obviously
lower (for streaming) but you get the idea.

http://www.musictv.com/ontheflyasx/gladys042801.asx

If you get asked for a username/password, use
gihe/DMACPCIF
Also, Media Player 7 seems better at handling the
file.

Best tracks:
2 ("Kalashnikov")
4 ("Course Yer Do")
5 ("Stella Chinese")
6 ("89/99")
7 ("Personal Appearance")

Enjoy!

Giles,
That is amazing! The wonders of technology will never cease to blow me away.
I've got a dsl line so it came through pretty smooth. The kit sounds great,
even if the P.A. isn't. I like the band and songs as well. You guys sound
pretty tight.

Anyway, nice job.
Rick

Re: [DTXpress] Wrist Problems

2001-05-23 by Richard C. MacDonald

Mike,
I have had the same problem (I've also had it before years ago) with my
right wrist/forearm. I've done three things to remedy it and it's getting
much better.
1) I've turned up the volume on my hi-hat and ride pads and backed of my
intensity when playing. I find that I can actually play faster this way with
less stress on the tendons. I'm playing with my fingers rather than my arms.
More jazz-style.
2) Make sure that you warm up well with some basic exercises or just some
lighter numbers. If you just launch into the death-speed-metal songs right
off the bat, it's going to get worse. Athletes warm up and stretch before
working out, musicians should do the same. Especially old guys like me.
3) I'm learning to play time with both hands. I saw Carter Beauford on a
Dave Matthews video and was amazed at how he switches back and forth at will
between the hands he's using for hi-hat, ride and snare. This isn't an easy
thing to learn but I've found that it feels pretty cool to just switch in
the middle of a song, and my right wrist/forearm feels much better. I can
also last much longer. Feels like I can play forever.

Hope this helps.
Rick

Re: [DTXpress] DTXpress live!!

Hi !
Thanx 4 the link Giles. Very interesting.
I've had my kit 4 about 6 months now and have been playing it live for all that time. It has proved itself time & time again and, like u say, gets a lot of attention from other muso's.
I run the kit thru the bands Peavey PA and also thru my Marshall keyboard combo which provides my monitoring although i am considering changing this to a couple of small studio monitors mounted on the kit frame hooked up 2 my small mixer so i get a better, more direct feedback from the rest of the band.
We play all sorts of venues from small pubs to medium sized live venues in and around Norwich and the kit copes with them all. When it comes to the smaller venues, the volume control is invaluable, coz as u all know, an acoustic kit has 2 volumes, loud or nothing !
I must also take this opportunity to thank Giles for the kits he has for download on his site. I use the Generic kit more than any other and they have inspired me to start creating my own specialist kits for various numbers we do.
If i have 1 moan about the DTXpress it would have to be the fact i can't send MIDI clock signals from my playing so that our sequencer (Yamaha RM1x) keeps in time with me. When we use the sequencer, i have to revert to headphones hooked up to my monitor system so that i hear it's playback above everything else so that i can keep in time. I've been doing it 4 so long that it's 2nd nature, but it's far from ideal. I remember many years ago a device called a "Dr Click" that u attached to acoustic drum skins, usually the kick, and sent the converted MIDI signal 2 the sequencer. I guess more expensive kits like DTXtreme or V-Drums might have that facility.
I have also taken advantage of the kits flexibility in positioning and moved the hi-hat pad in between toms 2 & 3 so i can play open handed. This allows greater freedom of movement and less muscular strain. This kind of thing is instantly possible with the DTXpress at no xtra cost..a major feather in it's cap over acoustic kits.
Anyway, enough of my blethering...If any 1 is in the Norwich area, look out 4 our band "The Usual Suspects" and come c the kit in action...believe me, it's more interesting than the drummer !! LOL

L8er,

Lovesign
Peace & B Wild

Way to Go.
Cool gig!!! Shame about the quality because of my shitty ISDN-line.

What do you call your style of music?
Sounds to me like some kind of Industrial post-punk hip-hop.
