Problem with Tone Generator

Problem with Tone Generator

1999-12-12 by meadowman@btinternet.com

I have just collected my new DTXpress that my
wife is getting me for Xmas - I am not allowed
to set it all up until Xmas but I have connected
up the "brain" so that I can see how it functions
and listen to some of the preset songs.
My problem is this - I have connected my computer
sequencer to the MIDI in socket on the "brain"
and I was expecting to be able to play some of my
sequences. I can't get any
sound from the brain - I know I have a midi signal
at the Midi in on the brain because I have one of
those little LED attachments to test it.
What obvious thing am I doing wrong please ?
Perhaps there is a setting that I haven't done
correctly ?

Thanks very much - I am looking forward to playing
it properly in a couple of weeks.

Regards

I'm not realy the guy to answer this, so I hope some of the more MIDI compatible members of this list help you out more, but here's a real simple one.

On the rear of the DTXpress is a four position switch, which controles what the brain talks to, I have mine set to MIDI because my band uses a MIDI out from a PC, all works almost fine ( read my problem querry if you fancy a laugh ). As for anything else, sorry I'm in a state over the sequencer and midi connections too.

Hope you find your answer ( don't forget about the DTXpress web site posted by Giles - http://www.gihe.demon.co.uk/DTXpressions/ )

Re: Problem with Tone Generator

Everyone,

I've been out of the loop for a while, as I have been playing with
(actually, beating up) my computer and some new software. But, during
that time, I found a trick to getting a better sound from the DTXpress.
You can get a nice round, fat tone by using a pair of marching sticks.
(If you have marching drum experience, this will be a good one for you.
If you don't, you might find the size of the sticks unbearable.)
Basically it seems that, since marching sticks have large heads and cover
more surface area than conventional sticks, they return a more full
sound. This suspicion was confirmed when I upped the ante and tried a
pair of felt mallets. They sounded great on the marimba setting!
Anyway, on to other things... Does anyone know if there is a way to
voice drum sounds on a MIDI channel other than 10? If so, how? This
would solve the entire problem of not being able to voice two drum kits
at the same time during recording! Maybe we can figure out a way to fool
the DTXpress into thinking drum sounds aren't what they appear to
be????????

Kelvin,

I'm having the same troubles with my system. I just bought some cheap
MIDI interface software, but I can't seem to transmit any data.
Everything is set up correctly, and the software works on all the sample
tracks. I'm wandering if I have the wrong driver? All there is to
choose from in the program is a Roland (keyboard) compatible. I know
there can be more though to choose from though, as it offers a drop down
menu to choose from. Is the DTXpress a Roland compatible? Also, make
sure you have your source switch on the back of the brain set correctly.
If you figure anything out, let me know.

Thanks,
Aaron

RE: Problem with Tone Generator

I found that you have to set the DTXpress sync to external so it responds to midi in from a sequencer. Its on one of the UTILS menus.
