drum sets during songs

2005-03-29 by ajoantmug

Hello, I am learning more every time I sit down behind this drumset. I
also seem to have new questions each time. I am trying to toy with
different recordings, which leads me to this question: How can I
record 1 track of a song with 1 drumset and record the second track
with a second drumset? What I am trying to do is lay the first track
down with a pretty standard jazz setup and the second track with a
vibraphone voicing so I can play different notes over the original
beat. Thanks in advance!

To the best of my knowledge, you can't do it on the DTXpress sequencer
alone without erasing the song. You'd have to play along with a song
via MIDI on another sequencer while recording the combination on track
1. Then you could record on track 2 with your second kit, or whatever
melodic instruments you wanted to add.

im fairly new to it as well, but couldnt you make the song a "pad
song"...start the song with the pad, recording the first track with
that song and the kit using the song, then use the second kit on the
second track?

Architiger,

I can see how you might have arrived there. But a pad song isn't
different from any other song in the module. It will have been
composed on two tracks. It will not be mixed down to a single track by
virtue of being played within the context of a particular kit. It
isn't actually even "played" on a pad and thus recordable on the
sequencer again. The programmed pad simply triggers a pre-existing two-
track song already in the sequencer. No room at the inn.

i see now. that clears it up a bit.
a related question:
could i make a drum set with intrument voices (say bass) and record
some riffs (with each pad/input being a diff note) then play along
with it on another set, and record that?

I can't see any reason why you can't use the tone generator to create
an instrumental kit and record a melody from it on track 1.
Quantization could smooth out any imprecision in tempo. Then you could
record your drums on track 2. I think one of our members describes
doing something similar, and using the bass track as a pad song to
trigger with his kick (or something like that). We added his method in
tips and tricks at dtxpressions.com. You might want to take a look at
it.
