How to record output of DTXpress ?

How to record output of DTXpress ?

2005-06-06 by mark.fletcher@allianzcornhill.co.uk

Hi There

As a recent purchaser of a second hand DTXpress III I have had great fun
over the last couple of weeks re-introducing myself to the joys of playing
the drums after a 12 year absence ! I currently have it set up to a Denon
Midi System and Kef Subwoofer and am learning my way through the various
tunes trying to increase the varieties of rhythms I can play.

My question is, what is a cheap and relatively simple way to record the
output of my drumming, I would like to do this firstly so I can listen back
and hear how many mistakes I make and where I make them ?

Many Thanks

Mark

Hi Mark,

Congratulations on picking up the kit and welcome to the group. I
assume that you don't want to use the DTXpress sequencer to record
the drums along with a MIDI track. I'm also going to assume that you
don't want to go the PC route with a sequencer/recording console,
which can be a little complicated and a little expensive, depending
on exactly what you want to do and how comfortable you are with
computer devices. I'm not sure exactly what a Denon Midi system is,
but it apparently doesn't entail what MIDI means to most of us here--
Musical Instrument Digital Interface, which would be sequencer
territory.

Cheap alternatives for audio recording will depend a little on
exactly what you mean by "cheap." You could use a two-track tape deck
or digital recorder to connect directly to the output of the module
or to a mixer receiving its output along with a separate feed from,
say, a CD player (is the Denon Midi system like a boom-box?). You
might also consider one of the relatively inexpensive 4-track
recorders from Fostex, Tascam, Yamaha, etc., which would give you
more control over the sound and finesse your recordings. The cassette
versions are the cheapest options, and if you'd be using it solely as
a notebook to keep track of your progress, a used one would probably
suffice, and allow a few more features. Ebay seems to have a ready
supply of them. The digital ones sometimes give you the opportunity
to master to disk right on-board, but that privilege obviously comes
with a price.

If I've messed up, let me know.

Many thanks for your reply, it appears I have confused this issue somewhat
with my mention of the word MIDI. By this I mean nothing more than the size
of the system, it is mid size in-between what I would class as full-size hi
fi equipment and a mini system. Seems like it's time for me to start
brushing up on my technological music terminology !!!

The Denon system is a combined AMP, TUNER and CD Player with several inputs
for tape, aux etc. I currently have the output of the DTXpress brain feeding
into the Aux input and therefore getting stereo sound out through the
speakers and sub. I reckon if I plugged in a MiniDisc player to the digital
output from my Denon it should record what I want to hear?

Thanks for the advice looks like there is a wealth of knowledge on here.

Cheers

Mark

Mark,

I figured that's what you meant by Midi system. Keep the volume way
down when you play the DTXpress through the Denon; you could easily
blow the speakers. What I'd do in your situation is connect the
output of the Denon (if it has one) to the aux input on the front
panel of the DTXpress module. Then you can use the volume control to
mix your feed (whether CD or tuner) with the kit to hear yourself
play along with real music (I suspect that you haven't been able to
do that yet). The result will issue from the headphone jack, which
you can use for monitoring (more below), and the back stereo outputs,
which can connect to your Minidisc player or cassette deck for
recording (if you want to record only yourself, turn the aux volume
all the way down and listen to the Denon through its own amp/
speakers).

As I said in the first post, using a dedicated mixer to take output
from both the Denon and the kit as an intermediate step before
recording will permit better control and flexibility. But the
shortcut w/o mixer should work fine. For at least the reason that I
alluded to above, monitoring by headphone is a better option than the
Denon's speakers, which are certainly too fragile to do the job for
long. If you can swing it, you'll need a low-impedance, high-
sensitivity set of phones, preferably with a closed design to keep
out stray noise and maximize SPL. If you need any more help, just
holler.

yeh a midi sysem (especialy a dennon one) is going to be some hifi
seperates (im guessing denon ones) ie cd player, tuner, preamp and
power amp etc etc. technicly a midi system is an all in one but i
know what he means.(lol between a maxi system and a micro system)
