Recording Session

Recording Session

2005-08-08 by WoofwoofX

Hello there,
I amnot a drumme, but we have bought a DTXpress III Sp for our studio
and not mutch of experience with it, hopefully I will get a hand from
you guys in order to do a recording session with Cubase sx (in 3 days
time)so:

1- Drumer Tried to trigger Ghost notes and the least vel I got it was
18 and not all the hits were recorded, How do you achieve ghost notes.

2- using brushes ...which is better tell the guy to bring his snare
and record it accosticly... or is there a way to work with it on DTX.

3- trying to achieve swiiishhhhhh effect by continuously hiting a
cybal will retriger the note and instead I will have a machine Gun
effect... is there any way to do it or should I tell the drummer to
bring his cybal and Mic it.

4- Is it possible to record Cymbal Chokes via MIDI and if not any
ideas or woekarroung.

5- do you have a drum map for cubase sx ...note I have placed one in
the forum's files section but it is based on the excel file already
there and it didn't match?

Thanks a million

I'll have a go at answering at least _some_ of your questions (though I'm
not the most experienced user here):

> 1- Drumer Tried to trigger Ghost notes and the least vel I got it was
> 18 and not all the hits were recorded, How do you achieve ghost notes.

You can do a lot adjusting the gain, minimum velocity and velocity curves
for the trigger inputs. In the trigger setup you can select which trigger
to edit by hitting it, then increase the gain to pick up lighter hits
(decrease to make you have to hit harder). Is there a minimum velocity
setting? can't remember. The velocity curve can adjust the way in which it
gets louder with increasingly hard hits and you can make it boost your
accents or make heavy hits almost the same volume as quieter ones. I think
there are other controls that may also help here. So if you are having a
problem with ghost notes not recording then increase the gain (but be warned
this can bring you into problems such as the other triggers interfering with
one another, setting each other off if gain is too high). If the quietest
notes are getting picked up but send out too high a velocity number then I
think adjust the minimum velocity and velocity curves.

> 2- using brushes ...which is better tell the guy to bring his snare
> and record it accosticly... or is there a way to work with it on DTX.

no point playing with brushes on the electronic kit. If you want the brush
sound, record it acoustically. If the guy just prefers playing with brushes
as opposed to sticks then make him use the flexible plastic rod ones
(whatever they're called) since these may act as brushes without many of the
nasty effects of brush 'sticking' to head, too soft to get picked up, etc.

> 3- trying to achieve swiiishhhhhh effect by continuously hiting a

Yeah I have mentioned this on the list and nobody seems to make any comment.
Its also just the way in which the cymbal sound drops in level when you hit
it quietly after hitting it loudly just before. Impossible to do on a real
cymbal (without choking...) it sounds ridiculous and pisses me off. This
pretty much makes the cymbals useless for playing anything other than a
standard crash/splash, so yeah you really need live cymbals for these kits.

can't answer any more q's. hope that is of some help!

Matt

Re: Recording Session

2005-08-12 by Nick Carroll

Regarding the use of brushes, it just isn't possible to use them
with an e-kit. But I have used sticks on the module's brush kit when
playing live with my country band. It didn't sound too bad, and I
tweaked and changed the sounds to suit what I wanted, but obviously
there are limitations, and real brushes on an acoustic kit will
always sound better.

Nick.
