New to electronic drums

Hey guys, I'm in Iraq right now and coming home in a few months.. I'm interested in these electronic drum kits. I've played guitar for 5 years now and have some experience with drums as well. First of all I seem to read a lot of reviews that refer to electronic drum kits for a more acoustic type approach? I understood that they could be used for any style.... My style being hard rock and some metal. Is this true or what? I'm not necessarily looking to play big live shows with this... mostly practice in the barracks and small rehearsel spaces. I'm looking to spend in the neighborhood of $1,000 to $1,500.. big range I know... but there seem to be a lot of good models in this range. Which do you guys prefer for my case in particular? Also, is there a really big difference between the circular cymbals and the more triangular ones or are the triangular ones as capable of producing as good an effect as the circular?
