DTXpander

2005-11-30 by ostin67

Hi, Can anyone explain exactly what the limitations are of the DIY
DTXpander. I have looked at the circuit diagram on this forum and I
beleive that I can make one but I am not sure what the limitations
are? I am right in thinking that I will be able to connect two pads to
the one input and assign two seperate voices? Thanks, any information
is much appreciated.

Yes, that is correct. The limitations are:

1. you will not be able to get both voices simultaneously

2. the DTXpress is generally less sensitive to rim hits then hits to
the main pad. This seems to be some deliberately function of the
module. A more complex circuit with gain can improve the situation a
little, but not eliminate it.

3. very small hits to the rim pad could be interpreted as a hit to the
centre pad.

It is probably best used to add cymbals and cowbells to the tom
inputs, for example, where great subtlety is not required on the
second pad. A bit of adjustment of the values can be beneficial, e.g.
reducing R1 down to 10k for more sensitivity to rim hits, and D2 can
be shorted out - it is mainly there for symmetry.

Keith.

Thanks very much for that! I hope to be putting together my expander
this weekend !

Well at long last I have finally built a DTXpander ! However, I am
unsure as to what to do next. When I plug it in I don't get any sounds
at all ! Do I need to program the DTXpress 3 first? Any help will be
much appreciated. Thanks

You should get the main pad sound without any programming. Most of
the built in kits have rim sounds programmed as well. If you are
getting nothing from the main pad then you have most likely a wiring
problem. In particular, make sure the diodes are the right way round.
The arrow points to the bar, which is the black line on the diode.
Try shorting out D2. Check you have the connectors wired correctly.
Tip to piezo, transistor collector to the ring. Otherwise it is
likely to be a short circuit.

What is the purpose of the DTXpander? Does it allow you to combine
two single zone peizo pads into one dual zone input like you would on
input 9/10? I am already using input 9/10 for this purpose and have
made my own splitter. I have a background in electronics but I'm
having trouble understanding the DTXpander circuit. I have the
DTXpress I(one) and I'm wanting to add more pads(triggers). If the
DTXpander circuit will allow this to happen what inputs can I use?

Thanks In advance for your replys.........

That's exactly what it does. On inputs 1-8, it allows for two single zone
pads to be connected. One would fire the main sound, the other would fire
the "rim" zone. I am using one of Keith's earlier designs (splits 4 inputs
into 8) and it works wonderful.

Yes, it allows you to put two single zone pads into one input.
However, inputs 9/10 are different - you can do it without an expander
box (as you have done) because it is really two seperate single zone
inputs. The rest are piezo+rim switch inputs so cannot be split in
the same way. There is a limitation to this way of expanding - you
cannot hit two pads connected to the same input through the expander.
This limitation does not exist on 9/10 because it is two genuinely
separate inputs. So, you need to choose the pads to combine with care.

Keith.

Thanks for the quick answers guys. I took the easy but an expensive way out
and bought another control module. I think I've caught the EBAY bug. I'm in
drum heaven now.
