Problems with my new DTXPRESS III Special

Problems with my new DTXPRESS III Special

2006-05-24 by drumminagain

Is anyone else experiencing problems with the 3-zone ride cymbal that
comes with the special set? My cymbal only plays the bow sound, no
matter where I hit it and no cup or edge sound. I've returned two
faulty cymbals so far and am beginning to wonder if others are having
problems like this. Also, my hi-hat and other pads cut out
occasionally (stop responding in the middle of playing and only start
responding again when I turn the module power off and on again). Is
this a problem with the module? Could there be problems with the ROM?

Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob

G'day Bob,
I am now convinced that Yamaha are having tech problems with this
model and they themselves don't know how to overcome them.

Just a few weeks back, I returned my DTXIIIsp to the store where
I purchased it, due to similar problems.
My kick drum and crash cymbal were randomly dropping out and it
quickly became a pain in the ass!

After they tested the kit at the store, no one could come to a clear
conclusion as to why it was happening however, it seems to be a
common fault in these kits and may be a "combination" problem that
involves one of the triggers and also the module at the same time.

I was informed that you are able to hit eight instruments at the
same time on this kit without anything dropping out.............
this is not the case.

Fortunately I was given the option to switch to the
Roland TD-6V for no extra cost, and WOW! what a difference.
This is a far superior kit for around the same money.

Bob, I suggest you return the kit from where you purchased it and
speak to the rep about swapping over to the TD-6V. At least have a
play of it, I believe you'll notice a huge difference in how the kit
sounds and feels. The rubber pads are far more realistic to hit and
the snare, which has a mesh head is simply awesome to play! And no
stick vibration to boot!

The programming is more user friendly as well and the sounds are far
more realistic too.

I don't know about the other Yamaha models, but the DTXIIIsp
is a heap of shit and not worth the money you pay for it,
due to the constant complaints of faulty workmanship.
(anyone who wants to question that, need only look to back through
the archives on this site, there's miles of faults listed there)

GET RID OF IT!!! Before the warranty runs out and check out the
Roland equivalent instead, you won't be disappointed.

Kind Regards,
              Chris.

Chris:

Thanks for your response to my message. Since I wrote my email, I
received a third replacement ride cymbal (pcy150s)and it's working OK
so far. I started physically unplugging the power adaptor from the
wall socket when the drumset is not in use and haven't had pads drop
out since I started doing this. Maybe the ROM gets hot and needs to
cool down. Any thoughts on this scenario?

If these types of problems persist, I'm going to try returning the
whole thing. What a shame. When it's working, I think the set is
terrific.

Regards,

Bob

>Question..
Are you playing along with the inbuilt tunes?
As the module has 32 notes to play with all at once you would think that
there should be enough to go round.
Some sounds do 'layer' so this would eat into that reserve.

I've a mk3 module, and I've not had any trouble, sorry to hear you've been
unlucky.

No, I'm not using the tunes included in the set. I'm playing along
with CD's. I agree with you that 32 voices should be more than enough
without overloading things. My hunch is the module is bad and will
need to be replaced. I'm going to try Yamaha support to see what I
can find out. I'll let you know what they have to say.

Bob
