Headphone sound level and quality yet again...

Headphone sound level and quality yet again...

2001-08-24 by Drew Cox

Hi all,

I've been an avid reader of this list for some time
and read all the old posts on the issue above.

I need to convince myself that my experience with the
headphones is normal and not a faulty unit, so I would
appreciate a little feedback and advice on others
experiences.

When I monitor the DTX through the headphones, with
the level set to absolute max, I get barely adequate
volume to hide the sticking sounds. Admittedly this
was through a fairly cheap pair of walkman-style
headphones (which can send me deaf when connected to
my Walkman).

So I went our and bought a pair of $70 Senheiser
phones with specs of Sensitivity 106db and impedance
32 ohm. These only helped maginally (but looked way
cool).

I am now looking at returning them and forking our
$100 for a pair of Sony monitor headphones, with
similar sensitivity but higher impedance. Being only
vaguely familiar with electronic engineering, I'm not
even too sure what I should be looking for. Hopefully
the extra $$$ mean something?

I this what all of you guys have to deal with on the
DTX? How can a manufacturer put out a product with
such a woefully inadequate volume level. Is there any
point in contacting Yahama support?

Finally, I have read some posts that the signal from
the line outputs on the back of the brain is
significantly different than the headphone level.
Some people said better, punchier, others said worse,
flat. Any comments on this?

Thanks
Drew

Drew,

I've had the same problem and almost didn't but the DTX because of it.
The good news is there is
a fix in the brain settings. The bad news is I don't remember it & and
since I'm at work, I can't
look it up. I recall it having something to do sith switching from
practice mode to live mode.
Look in you manual. or maybe someone on this list knows off hand.

Get some good cans and the "problem" goes away. My unit is plenty loud after
I picked up some Sennheiser's.

Re: [DTXpress] Headphone sound level and quality yet again...

Oops. Sorry for not reading far enough down the message. I'm just running my
headphones in through their normal jack, but they are closed cans
(Sennheiser HD200). I realize that this may compromise the quality a bit,
but they sure seal out the stick noise and bring up the drum sounds (great
on airplanes as well...). They are waaaay better than my open Yamaha phones
with the DTXpress.

Re: [DTXpress] Headphone sound level and quality yet again...

2001-08-25 by lovesign@talk21.com

Hi All,

If it's of any interest, i use Sennheiser Evolution H2200 cans in both live and studio set-up's. Here's the tech spec:

Dynamic transducer
Circum Aural, closed back ear coupling
12-22000 Hz Frequency Response
64 ohm impedance
Characteristic SPL (@1KHz, 1 Vrms) 106dB
THD (@ 1KHz, 100dB SPL) <0.3%
140g
3M oxygen free copper cable (OFC) detachable with 2.5mm jack
3.5mm stereo jack with 1/4" adaptor.

These are specially designed cans 4 musicians and sound engineers and cost approx. £50. I got mine from Richer Sounds (UK).

Best Cans Ever ! LOL

Rob.

Hi all --

I asked the exact same question (about headphone sound level) earlier
today -- i see now that this is a problem for many...

I have the EXACT same headphones as the ones described below, and i
still feel like i am not getting enough volume out of the DTXPress
headphone jack...

I am still looking through the archives for answers, but just wanted
to say that so far, it seems like upgrading headphones alone is not
enough to deliver what i consider to be a satisfactory sound level...

so, other suggestions?
thanks!

If you use the UTIL menu to set the volume mode output quality to "LIVE".
When you are in this live mode you can adjust snare & kick with with the
accomp vol and click vol controls.
Holding shift on these same volume controls will allow the volume of cymbals
and toms to be changed.

Hope this helps!
