Home Recording

2001-09-24 by chitsman@silcom.com

I was at a friends house over the weekend that has a Protools system.
I had a blast recording and working on groove ideas and songs using
my DTXpress kit. I am wanting to set up my own small home studio for
further exploration of my own song writing ideas.

I'm curious to know what other DTXpress owners are using as a home
recording setup? Computer based? Non-computer based? Software and
hardware? Cost?

I have read many posts of people who are recording at home, but I
haven't been able to get a clear picture of the equipment necessary
for a basic setup.

Thanks to all who respond!

Cary,

There are various solutions but mine is:

PC PIII 700MHz running Cubase VST 5.1, using a USB multi-midi interface (you can get a variety of makes from 1 to 8 channels). The DTXpress midi ports are then connected to the USB interface. Best to stay away from soundcard midi interfaces - they can give problems on some cheaper cards (and you can only talk to one midi instrument). The DTXpress needs setting up so the midi note numbers correspond with VST/general midi. All my instrument outputs including the DTXpress are routed through a Spirit SX mixing desk, monitor output driving a Sony HiFi amp for speaker output and main mix outputs driving a Beringer 4 channel headphone amp. Other instruments used are Korg and Yamaha midi synths.

This configuration allows hard disk recording to other channels in VST for real time sync of vocals, guitars etc.

You need to switch midi thru OFF in VST midi setup when playing the DTXpress so it stops the midi playing the drums sounds along with the pads.

Hope that helps...

Paul
