Recording from DTX to Cakewalk

Recording from DTX to Cakewalk

2007-02-16 by ajcollette

I am trying to record MIDI tracks from my DTXpress II to CakeWalk SONAR
XL. When I playback through the DTX is sounds fine, but when I play
through the sound card in Cakewalk the bass kick and snare are click
tracks instead of the actual bass and snare sounds. I have tried
adjusting a number of things and can't seem to get it right. Any help
would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yamaha assigns non-standard note numbers to snare and kick. Adjust the
note numbers to match Cakewalk, and you should be good to go. I can't
remember the precise numbers in question.

Ok, thanks for the tip. I have to plead as being a newbie to
electronic drums and still working to get through all the nuaances.
So can you help with the best way to change the note numbers?

Man, it's been a while since I dabbled with Cubase, let alone a Yamaha
module. But you might look in Cubase's drum editor for its expected
snare and kick note numbers, and then change accordingly on the DTX.
The GM default on most all MIDI devices for kick and snare (except for
the Yamahas) is C1 and E1, respectively.

The voices on the DTXpress kits out of the box used to be assigned by
input. If you altered the note number of a particular pad on a
particular kit in the Voice menu, you weren't likely to get the
expected sound when you changed kits but hit the same pad. I don't
know whether the DTX modules still behave in this manner. Beware.
Maybe someone a little more up to date on this issue will respond.

Nonetheless, aligning the note numbers in Cubase and the DTX will
restore the snare and kick to their rightful sounds.
