Complete beginner needs intro to MIDI ...

2007-10-05 by Cat Lake (Percussionist)

Hi ya guys
I'm actually a V-Drums user but, as MIDI is pretty much a universal language, I'm wondering if your "MIDI specialists" here would be willing to advise on where best to start?
I have the usual sockets on the TD-6 module and a reliable desktop PC with 1GB of RAM. What software do you recommend? Should I use a USB device or the old game port method of connecting MIDI instruments to your machine?
Thanks in advance for bringing me into the 21st century. I'm looking forward to exploring this new area of music production and electronic percussion as a whole.
Regards,
Cat Lake

Hi Cat,

Your questions are pretty vague. I assume you want to connect your V-Drums to your PC, but for what purpose ? Are you looking to use them to trigger sounds from the PC or control VST instruments ? Or are you looking to hook them up to the PC so you can record them in a sequencer ? A little clarity on this matter will help give you the right response. Also, are you planning to hook up any other bits of MIDI gear in conjunction with the V-Drums ?

I hook all my studio MIDI gear up to my PC via a Yamaha UX256 USB MIDI hub. This allows me to control up to 256 channels of MIDI in my PC and route it accordingly. USB is almost definitely the way to go although there is nothing wrong with the old gameport/soundcard method other than you will be restricted to one IN and one Out, typically.

I personally hook my DTXpress kit to my studio rig via the UX256 when I want to use the kit to record drum parts. Invariably, I then route the MIDI data to an alternate tone generator, such as one of my Akai samplers. In a live environment, I usually hook the kit up to a single sampler directly. I occasionally build in an Akai MPC for some interesting loop/break creation too.

So, give us some more to go on and maybe we can help you further :o)

All the best,

Rob.
