dtxplorer amplification

Hi there I'm looking for information about amplifing my kit with the
cost of amplifiers being what they are i have no interest at all in
buying an amp which isn't going to do the trick. going through the
hassels of returning an amp because it doesnt sound good enough isn't
what i'm looking forward to either.does anyone have a really good amp
that they are using which will give my kit the sound i'm looking for
without costing a fortune? What i've been thinking of buying is a powerd
speaker (behringer B215A or simular)200 watts 15" speaker with voice
coil.anybody tried this yet and if so what are the results?what i want
is a kit that sounds as close to an acoustic kit as possible at levels
which will compeat with a marshal stack when practicing in the garage
because we all know those primadona guitarists just won't leave the
volume knob alone for more than half a song at a time.(usually about a
quarter note into the song) thanks geoff

Geoff,

I have a similar powered speaker from Thomann "The Box" which has a
15" bass speaker and 200W to the bass and 100W to the tweeter I think.
It seems loud enough, but it does clip due to the bass when cranked
up. It doesn't seem to do any harm and sounds ok, but the clip light
flashes. It seems that the bass soaks up a fair bit of power before
it sounds "too" loud. So, depending on how deep your pockets are and
what type of music you play, you might need to look for a bit more
power for the bass unit. I just educated the guitarists to turn
their's down.

Having recently bought an acoustic kit, one thing I noticed is that
the acoustic kit is way louder than I can get my DTXpress through the
amp/speaker, but then that is serious earplug territory.

Keith.

What about just running the drums through the PA
system? You would also in theory get a better stereo
pan on the drums that through a single channel amp.

I run my dtxtremeII thru a 6 channel Yamaha mixer/PA
(emx66m)and Yamaha BR15's and I like the result. Plus
I can use the PA for other things as well to help
justify the cost.. like DJ'ing.
And for larger gigs, you can use this setup as drum
monitors, and just feed the house PA with your mix.

just my two cents :)

I have found that a compressor helps greatly with what you are describing. It helps make the most of what you have by smoothing out the peaks and gives you a bit more "loudness"... For the price I recommend Nady amps. I have 2 in my DJ rig "xa700 and xa900" and they are reliable, well built, and plenty powerful. They are also pretty transparent sounding as an amp should be. Just get you a decent set of cabs for it. I recommend behringer cabs for the best bang for your buck, just remember that crossover will help quite a bit!

I fought with this question for a short time and used Alesis, Roland, Yamaha drum amps. I finally settled on a Behringer Ultratone3000FX keyboard amp. Plenty of power and good value. You can also go thru a p.a. if you have enough punch and cabinets that can handle the drums your putting thru. Any good soiund man can help out. Good luck, for my money and trials go with the Behringer...

Any particular recommendations when it comes to compressors?

I've also been recommended to use a two-channel DI box on my kit's output
too as we take it straight into a mixer and then off to an amp and speakers.
Any comments on that?

Cat Lake

That's exactly what we do in both bands I perform with.

We've had some fantastic feedback from our audience who said it sounded so
much better balanced and was just like listening to a live recording rather
than a *loud* concert. :-)

Stay whiten your budget. I have had good luck with a behringer model. They have great bang for the buck. As far as the DI box it is defiantly advisable to have something in between the drums and PA, I use a small behringer mixer but I suppose a DI box would be fine. I just prefer having my own drum mixer with me so that I can control my sound a little better. I was also thinking on the amplification subject and a nady xa-700 amp bridged mono provides 700wrms, this would mate good with one of the kustom duel 15" PA speakers (if you only desire mono) this should provide plenty of kick to keep up with a guitar stack and could be had for less than $500. Playing live you could then use that for your monitor and run through the pa. This IS a big heavy speaker to tote but would blow away ANYTHING around $500.

I just saw my musicians friend catalog and the nady amp/kustom dual 15" setup can be had for $300!!! This setup would be QUITE powerful for that and I have a feeling would make you very pleased!
