MIDI and Software Kits

Wanted to try a minimalist approach to triggering PC software samples from my DTXSPIII kit for live use to get more avaialble sounds.   What do i need?   MIDI to USB cable, software samples like EZ drummer and ????  Can it even be done?

I'm using an m-audio audiophile, midi cable and ezdrummer for this, works like a charm.
