DTXpress IV Mixer / Amp / Speakers Suggestions Please?

DTXpress IV Mixer / Amp / Speakers Suggestions Please?

2011-02-13 by brinkerz128

Hi all! - First time post :)

When I purchased my xpress IV, I bought a Legacy LE150MA to go with it.
However! - I have since progressed on to seriously eyeing off buying a Yamaha EMX512SC Mixer/Amp (http://www.yamahamusic.com.au/produc...mx/default.asp) along with a pair of Yamaha C112V 12" PA Speakers (http://www.yamahamusic.com.au/produc...loud/clubv.asp).

These will not be used for live gigging or similar of any sort in the foreseeable future. These are purely for really enjoying everything from Crowded House to TOOL whilst learning and having fun with it all. (Capacity to annoy the neighbours is clearly a bonus).

This gear is all going to be played in a room essentially 4m x 4m or so, so realistically anything is going to have enough poke in a room that size. I'm obviously wanting to get this right as there'll be no going back in 6 weeks / months time to correct the purchase with more $$.

I have listened to the Yamaha mixer I speak of with the A series 15" speaker 'in store' and they sounded brilliant to me - albeit just playing an array of audio tracks.

It was only upon further investigation with another specialist PA supplier that they introduced me to the 12" speakers I've linked above as they felt they were a superior speaker and would provide enough bottom end for the bass, etc.

The idea of a mixer never really occurred to me until I was downstairs recently playing my iPod through this Legacy LE150MA that I originally bought and thinking 'ok there's volume but it sounds generally pretty average'. And so a few tracks later, my daughter goes 'dad have you got a microphone?' .... and so I get thinking and wander into a large music retailer here where I was introduced to the Yammie's.

Coupled with the right leads, the iPod through this system at 8 feet away was clearly STREETS ahead of the Legacy unit, there was the expansion and flexibility for Miss 7's microphone and Mr 5's (or mine!) addition of bass guitar or similar in years to come perhaps.

Throw in the concept of their birthdays, etc in years to come and the 'mixer / speaker PA concept' was showing a lot of accommodating scope I thought yet still it's primary job was for when I did have the opportunity to go 'bye honey, have a good few hours with the kids!' and go disappear into (passed) youth a bit \uf04a

Currently down here there is only $150AU between the EMX312SC (600w) & the EMX512SC (1000w) mixers when bundled with speakers, so as it's 'only 150' it kinds gets me thinking 'do I do it - to get it - then I've got it'.
But equally if I'm not going to use say for example ' the upper 60% capacity' of the 312SC unit then I'm never going to use 'the upper 80% capacity' of the 512SC unit perhaps. And as such 150 is still 150 - you wouldn't walk around it if you saw it on the footpath - so why spend it if I'm never going to hear it. (But that reasoning is clashing with my get it / got it reasoning).

And again, I don't want the kick bass to sound like dropping tacks on the floor. It doesn't need to blow the pailings off the fence but if I'm spending the $$ then a nice balance is important to achieve.
I can't fully grasp how loud these will be but I'm inclined to think they're going to be MORE than sufficient!

So the question(s) - Will these marry up nicely with the kit or is there something else I should be looking at in your (informed) opinions??

(I like the 5 year warranty with Yamaha and have only recently come across Mackie brand and others in my investigations.)

Apologies for the big first post but your reading time and responses would be appreciated.
Cheers!

Hey man!

Mick in the states here. I've got the same set and what I use is a Behringer Truth B2092A sub woofer. It has 360 watts to a 15" speaker with an active crossover stereo output which feeds two Behringer 2030's on either side of my kit. They each have a 125 watt bi-amp in them which feed a woofer and a tweeter.

Go to Behringers website for more tech details, but this setup "cranks"! A real "lease buster" BTW - the B2092 also has outputs to feed the "house" PA is you must be even LOUDER!

The stuff is relatively inexpensive and ridiculously over engineered (nutty krauts!)

Gday Mick, thanks for letting me know.
The Behringers from what I've read tend to get a bit of negative press in so far as 'they can and will break' - so it's been interesting to read of your positive response.

How do you find your kit mate?
Mines not an off the shelf xpress iv - it's got a few other bits but for many life reasons, it's just celebrated it's 2nd birthday and I'm yet to play a note on it can you believe it!
(Though the time is drawing near, hence the PA discussion.)

Love the "lease buster" phrasing :)
Cheers,
brinkerz

I don't know about Beheringer stuff breaking down, I've been using the setup I described for 3-4 years now with no problems. I have a pair of Truth B2031's I've use for my studio monitors for 10 years or more - and I BLAST them at times. No problems! I also have a pair of MS40's I've used OUTSIDE on my deck for the past 2-3 years to listen to music via my netbook's RF connection to my main computer in the basement. No problems!

As for the drum kit - a stone gas! Love being able to dial in different sets and its great to be able to play like a wild man yet turn the volume down to accompany an acoustic guitarist!

Later
