new to drumming

2001-12-20 by ryanbrow2001

I am a middle aged guy who has taken a few drum lessons which i
enjoyed. I need to buy some equipement if i am going to stay
motivated to explore this new interest further. A regular drum set is
too loud for my family. I have been looking into a DTXpress kit
through ebay, and other dealers. As a new comer to drumming should i
take the plunge with a kit like this or should i be starting with
something simpler, easier? Also, if this is the way to go, how much
should i expect to pay for an electonic drum kit?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ryan

Hi Ryan,

I think the DTXpress would be a great starting point -
it has a lot of features to help you improve your
skills, it is expandable if you want to upgrade it,
and it is much quieter than accoustics.

For the price issue, I have seen them run from the
$500 - $600 range up to $800 for a used kit on eBay,
with new ones running around $1000 new. You do need
to keep in mind that the new ones do not typically
include a throne, bass pedal or sticks - the used ones
sometimes include these.

Just to be sure you are not surprised, The bass pedal
setup does usually make some noise, so a little fore
thought in where you set them up can help out on the
marital bliss side of things.

Also, although the sales literature indicates that you
can hook up an external source for music (like a CD
player) to play along with, I have found that using an
inexpensive mixer yields much better results.

Hope this helps,

Walt

Hi Ryan,

I fit in with your description of a 'middle aged guy' too.
Having bought a DTXpress about a year ago, I can only say go for it !

Ryan,

I'm glad to see I'm not the only middle aged guy on this list.
I bought a DTxpress last year at Christmas when my 11 year old daughter
said she wanted a drum kit. To save everyone's sanity, I got a DTxpress
and am very happy with it. I'm not a drummer either, (played guitar for
30 years) so I couldn't justify the cost of the V-drums. I really
enjoyed
the kit. I can play at night without disturbing anyone, It's great.
The only thing I found disappointing at first was the low headphone
volume.
This can be corrected by getting a decent set of Sony Headphones and
editing
the volume and EQ settings on the brain. It takes a little digging in
the manual
but after making those adjustments I'm happy with the unit.

Good luck and Merry Christmas

Art

Re: [DTXpress] new to drumming

2001-12-22 by Richard C. MacDonald

Go for it, Ryan. Treat yourself. I don't consider myself "middle aged" (even though I may technically be...) but I've been playing since I was a kid, took a long break, and then picked it up again when I decided to get a DTXpress over a year ago. I haven't looked back.
I'm completely satisfied with the performance (I'm not gigging, so I'm not trashing it), and my playing has improved quite a bit because I can play almost any time. As others have said, it's not completely silent, but it seems tolerable to my family. My 8 year old has picked it up and is doing really well. Completely her idea. I bet your kids do as well (looks like you have some). It's not hideously complicated to operate unless you want it to be (it's fun to customize the kits). Get yourself a nice set of closed headphones (like DJ's use) as they are louder with this unit, and block out the pad/stick sound.
You shouldn't have to pay more than $1000, even new.
Have fun,
Rick

Re: [DTXpress] new to drumming

buy it. just do it. I'm in your shoes - I'm 38 and bought
mine 2 years ago. I run it throught headphones using a mixer
and a 30 watt home stereo amp. The stress relief is a godsend
when you can beat the crap out of a rubber pad, produce awesome
sounds, and not disturb anyone.

The DTXPRESS is the most impressive / quality / professional
kit in it's price range - actually, i don't think there is anything else
in this price range. DON'T BUY A USED KIT - The pads go
bad, the HH wears out, the kick pad sensor goes - the mounts strip
... just avoid the hassle and buy it new. $1000 or less should get you
going.

http://www.americanmusical.com/ will let you make no interest payments
( $200/mo ). I know you can get it cheaper, but I've ordered alot of
stuff from them and have never had any issues.
