Q: Mapping pads to specific MIDI notes

Q: Mapping pads to specific MIDI notes

2002-02-25 by kim.johnsson@ineo.fi

Hi guys!

I bought a Yamaha DTXpress set last saturday, and I have one question
about using external sounds, as opposed to the ones generated by the
brain.

I want to use, for example, my Kurzweil K2600's existing drum program with
my DTXpress pads. The Kurz program has certain drum sounds mapped to
certain MIDI notes, and to be able to play a snare with my DTXpress, my
snare pad needs to send the MIDI note number that corresponds to the snare
sound on the Kurz. Apparently, though, the MIDI note numbers sent by the
brain are only dependent on which input that generates the particular MIDI
event, and cannot be changed. I know how to change which sound the brain
generates when a pad is hit, but it looks like I can't change the outgoing
note number.

Am I wrong?

If not, I will need to create a new Kurz program and assign the drum
sounds I want to use to the keys that correspond to my pads. This is of
course possible, but I'd rather do this mapping on the DTXpress itself. I
hope it can be done somehow...

Help appreciated,

        Kim Johnsson

If I understand what you want to do, you'd like to change midi notes sent by
the DTXpress brain? Yes, you can. Edit your kit in the voice menu. Choose
your pad. Change the midi note in a screen where it is written note#= (just
after the decay screen). Does it work?
