Everyone,
I'd like to settle this stick thing once and for all. When I originally
e-mailed everyone about using larger sticks for a fatter sound, I meant
just that. I didn't mean to say that you can actually make the sound
LOUDER. Actually, I don't remember saying that at all but if I did, I
apologize. Anyway, all I mean by saying that a larger stick sounds
better is that it provides for MORE sound (more sonic vibrations, if you
will). The difference being like taking a big bite of cake as opposed to
a small bite --it doesn't taste any different, just more. Besides, this
is just MY ear talking. Whatever works for you is your deal, and that's
great. I just happened to notice a marked difference between a 5A and a
marching stick, as well as mallets. I consider this to be a strong point
of the DTXpress--the more it can pick up on the better. I'm glad the
pads were built to understand the difference between a small thing and a
big thing. Also, I don't think anyone should use what they don't like.
Drumming is a personal matter first of all, and you decide what works for
you. EXPERIMENT, EXPERIMENT, EXPERIMENT!!! I hope that clears any
questions up on the stick issue.

Next up, I've also been wandering about the geography of the list. It
must be world wide, Graham, because I'm in the states (Lawrence, Kansas
to be exact--about 30 minutes by car from Charlie Parkers home town). I
know a couple of others on the list are from the states as well, and then
a couple are from the UK. What about everyone else?

Third, I was wandering what everyone thought about advertising this list.
I found out about it a few months ago from the archives of a bulletin
board at a WWW drum site (can't remember the name), but I'm sure it's
been deleted since. I would gladly post info here and there about the
list, if everyone thinks it's a good idea. I don't know, it may get too
crowded eventually. Today I received 7 messages form this list alone!
On the other hand, the more people we have the more of an info. base we
will have to draw from. What's up?

Good drumming to you all,
Aaron

Well Thanks for the info and my map reference is Milton Keynes, England!
Mid way between London & Birmingham for those without a map!

Cheers

Graham.

Aaron - sorry about the stick/sound thing. I guess we
just have different ways of looking at it.

Graham - I'm based in Coventry in the UK - not far
from you actually...
Coventry is right in the middle of England and is
famous for Lady Godiva, unfriendliness and having the
shit bombed out of it in World War II.

Just a reminder to everyone - SEND SOME USER KITS!!!

Hi Giles,

Thanks for the laugh about Coventry - is it really that bad?!!!

Just a question to all and please don't go all technical on me, as I'm not
ready for the ins and outs, but has anyone connect their kit to an Apple
computer anywhere?

Just so I know who to talk to in 10 years time when I'm ready!

Also, guess this has been discussed before(?) but who hits the mark in the
drum world for you guys?

I was never a musician's musician, totally self taught, so no fancy stuff
from me, but I did all right and had a few moments in the spot light.

For me, I always listened to Phil Collins ( in his 70's days Brand X, Genesis
) before he went AOR, Bill Bruford ( just listened, never copied ) Simon
Phillips, who went to my school ( as did another well known muso, but don't
get me in to that story ) and people like Manu Katche who drops my jaw.

Endless others too, but many are never noted for their skills as they are not
soloists, but they hold a great groove.

Just curious!

Cheers

Graham

Re: Various

2000-01-19 by Giles Hearn

Is this spooky or what??
You only went and listed my 2 out of my 3 favourite
drummers of all time! (Bill and Simon) My other is
Vinnie Coliuta (currently being wasted in Sting's
band)

Oh I almost forgot
Billy Cobham
Pete Erskine
Omar Hakim
Neil Peart

I blame Mr. Bruford for my interest in e-drums, his
work in King Crimson and Earthworks made me realise
that drummers could finally become "musical" and not
just the guy at the back banging out backbeats.

Sorry for the off-topic post, everyone - you know what
it's like when drummers get together.....

Aaron...I'm located in the good 'ol USA....NorthEastern New Jersey (right
next to NYC) to be more specific. I have been noodling around with the
DTXpress for just the past couple of weeks, but so far absolutely no
problems! I'm still waiting for the new PC to be able to begin experimenting
with the MIDI potential. As far as advertising goes, I drop the link on the
RMMP newsgroup every once in awhile, whenever a new DTXpress question is
raised. Figure, the more the merrier! Especially considering the tremendous
amount of helpful information everyone provides here! Looking forward to
learning more tips & tricks from you guys (and gals)!!

Hello!

It's been a while since I've posted. I apologize. I'll try to do better. I
did want to respond to some of the things you all are talking about.

I am from Huntsville, Alabama. It's about 2 hours south of Nashville and
3-4 hours from Atlanta. I think it's great that, through a minimal amount
of effort, folks from different areas of the world can get together on
common ground. I have no problem with the content of the list shifting
topics every once in a while. That's what seperates typical lists from the
really good ones. I enjoy reading about what life is like elsewhere.

As far as advertising the list, the more the merrier. If a bad apple signs
up, I can boot him/her.

Favorite drummers - Chad Sexton, Matt Chamberlain, Tim Alexander, Billy
Martin, Terry Bozzio, Carter Beauford, Dennis Chambers...in addition to the
ones you've mentioned. I could go on and on.

I second Giles' call for more user kits! I'm dying to get more! I'd send
you a few more, Giles, but you didn't post the ones I had already sent. I
figured you either don't like them or forgot about them.

	Gotta get back to work.

			Chris

Re: Various

2000-01-19 by AARON M CRIM

If anyone hasn't, I'd highly recommend checking out Horacio "El Negro"
Hernandez. If you like the Latin flair, he's the MAN (Cuban). This guy
effortlessly plays clave rhythm with his left foot, while playing amazing
solo and phrase material over the top. Unreal. (His double bass work
isn't too shabby, either.) I'm in to endless others--too many to name
here: Elvin Jones, Sonny Pane, Milford Graves, Chambers, Williams,
DeJohnette...you name it. They're all an inspiration. Also, if anyone
has any spare cash laying around, I recently ran across a series of
videos that are being put out by RHINO. If you're not familiar with the
RHINO label, I'll tell you that I have never been let down by them.
Anyway, they are releasing a series of videos of the 60's show "Ralph
Gleason's Jazz Casual." If you're not familiar with the show, basically
the musicians would come on, do a half hour gig and leave. That simple.
I have four of the series so far, and they're all great (Sonny Rollins
[Ben Riley], Dizzy Gillespie [Chuck Lampkin], Count Basie [Sonny Pane],
and John Coltrane [Elvin Jones]). Definitely worth checking out. A good
way to get up close and personal w/ the bands, and the drummers as well.
Also a relic of a bygone era in TV (too bad).
Take care,
Aaron
