If anyone hasn't, I'd highly recommend checking out Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez. If you like the Latin flair, he's the MAN (Cuban). This guy effortlessly plays clave rhythm with his left foot, while playing amazing solo and phrase material over the top. Unreal. (His double bass work isn't too shabby, either.) I'm in to endless others--too many to name here: Elvin Jones, Sonny Pane, Milford Graves, Chambers, Williams, DeJohnette...you name it. They're all an inspiration. Also, if anyone has any spare cash laying around, I recently ran across a series of videos that are being put out by RHINO. If you're not familiar with the RHINO label, I'll tell you that I have never been let down by them. Anyway, they are releasing a series of videos of the 60's show "Ralph Gleason's Jazz Casual." If you're not familiar with the show, basically the musicians would come on, do a half hour gig and leave. That simple. I have four of the series so far, and they're all great (Sonny Rollins [Ben Riley], Dizzy Gillespie [Chuck Lampkin], Count Basie [Sonny Pane], and John Coltrane [Elvin Jones]). Definitely worth checking out. A good way to get up close and personal w/ the bands, and the drummers as well. Also a relic of a bygone era in TV (too bad). Take care, Aaron
