Yamaha DTXpress/DTXplorer/DTXtreme

Hi!

I'm playing my DTxpress trying to record on my PC in cakewalk.

My local is set to off on my DTXpress, and the PC is set to use the 
dtxpress as the output for that track, and when I play on the kit, 
it gets recorded successfully, and I can hear when I hit a pad 
through my dtxpress's amp.

Here's my problem.  When I try to record along with Cakewalk's 
metronome, I try to hit the pads in time with the beat, but the 
sound is taking too long to come out of the speakers.

I suspect that that's just the way things are, and that I've got a 
basic problem with the way I've got this all setup.  How all do you 
configure all this for recording in cakewalk?

You need to adjust your latency settings in cakewalk. This is very 
easy to do and is explained in the cakwalk manual. Do not try for too 
low a latancy if you do not have a good computer, as cakewalk will 
have drop outs. Let me know if you need help AFTER you try the 
directions in the manual.

I just found the "wave profiler" settings in the audio options, so I 
think that they're set right now.

However, I've noticed some other weird things happening, and I 
already had those latency settings set quite low.

I played for a while on Sunday, and I noticed that one time the 
latency was short, like a couple hundred milliseconds, but later, 
when I went back to do some others, it became HUGE, like 10's of 
seconds, up to almost 30, and there was never any dropout, just a 
long long delay.  After resetting both the PC and the DTX, it was OK 
again.  This seems to me to be more like the units are automatically 
replying back and forth, and there's no more bandwith on the midi 
cable to send the message.  They get sent eventually, but after a 
while.

Anyhow, I hope the latency settings take care of it, and it's just 
good to know that what I've setup so far is somewhat like what other 
people are doing with all this equipment! :)

Cool. The learning curve on the midi stuff is pretty
steep. And most of the manuals SUCK! Good Luck with
it.

Try buying MIDI for musicians by Craig Anderton. Pretty complete, it will
give you a very good panorama of MIDI.
